FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA

Nigeria is located in west Africa and it is the most populous country on the continent of Africa. After several years of colonization, the federal republic of Nigerian was established on October 1, 1960 and the national flag and the coats of arms were adopted to represent our freedom from British governance. It has 36 states and the federal capital territory (Abuja). Nigeria currently has a civilian government after several years of military interruptions. And as the world prepares to usher in the new year , Nigeria prepares to elect it's next civilian president in may 2007. The country has two major political parties: People's Democratic Party of Nigeria and the All Nigeria People's Party, however, there are several other minor political parties that are also registered.

Nigeria occupies a total area of 923,768 square kilometer, of which about 13,000 square kilometer is made of water. It shares boundaries with Cameroon, Benin, Niger and Chad. The country has about 150 Million People and 250 ethnic groups, each with it's peculiar dialect. The three major languages are Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo, but the language of communication is English. Nigeria is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world that is rich both in natural and human resources. It is my country and I am very proud of it.
